Orakei Reclad

The existing home was tired and dated. The façade and roof design was busy making the plaster cladding and membrane balcony’s problematic and susceptible to water damage. The clients bought the house with the purpose of bringing it back to life by recladding and renovating it.

It was a long narrow site with angled boundaries, which made it restrictive and resulted in an elongated building layout. The roof design was simplified with a mono-pitch style and vertical cedar shiplap cladding was used to enhance the verticality. This also helped modernised the architectural form. A boxed parapet balustrade to the north west provided privacy and shelter from the road and driveway, while a glass balustrade to the north east opened up to the views.

Internally the upper and lower level were switched. The master suite and second bedroom were moved to the lower level with a second living area incorporated. The kitchen, dining, living area were moved to the upper level making it more spacious and filled with light. The open plan design flows out onto the wrapping deck to the north and east.
